Herefordshire 4X4 Response Group is run by a group of voluntary 4 x 4 vehicle owners who offer their time and their vehicles to Statutory and voluntary agencies to assist in an emergency situation where the use of four wheel drive vehicles are required. Herefordshire 4x4 Response Group covers the whole of Herefordshire county but is also available to offer assistance to other Response Groups in the country.

It can only respond to a calls from statutory or voluntary agencies, who direct all calls for support to Joint Emergency Planning Unit for Herefordshire Council and Herefordshire Primary Care Trust, who will in turn contact us as per our pre-arranged agreement. We do not respond directly to calls from members of the public. They should dial 999 and ask for the appropriate service whenever there is any danger to life or property. Our group is part of the Herefordshire County Voluntary Emergency Committee and are prepared to assist 24/7, whenever the need arises, and can provide assistance with: Evacuation, Transportation of goods, Transportation of personnel, Recovery of stranded vehicles, Searches and support when road conditions prevent normal access for vital services.

Herefordshire 4x4 Response Group are not a replacement for the Emergency Services, but a group of volunteers who offer support to assist them to achieve their effectiveness in unusual or high demanding circumstances.  

Herefordshire 4x4 Response Group is a totally voluntary service. However, it is reasonable for them to claim fuel expenses incurred when acting in support of the Local Authorities. Fuel costs are likely to be higher when driving through snow or floodwater and it is expected that they will be reimbursed the full cost of the fuel they use in a given emergency.

Herefordshire 4x4 Response Group are covered by the Public Liability Insurance put in place by the National 4x4 Response Network which covers us for all of our activities, whether responding to a call or attending a training operation In addition to the Members own vehicle insurance.

Herefordshire 4x4 Response Group can be summoned to assist in an emergency through contact with the Duty Emergency Planning Officer at Herefordshire's Joint Emergency Planning Unit. It is important that the Joint Emergency Planning Unit coordinates requests for assistance in emergency situations. The Duty Officer is available on 24-hour call throughout the year.
